Static Maps (Click on image to open a map in a new browser)

Route - Complete

These are static maps of the route I am planning to take. They were made using ESRI ArcMap and a variety of free files downloaded off the internet. There are of course caveats - old roads may have disappeared and new roads will have (hopefully) been created.

Over the course of the ride I hope to update this map and the individual maps with the actual path as recorded by an animal tracking device.

Google Earth - Movie

There have been some difficulties coverting the shapefile of the route into a viable Google Earth file. There are issues with running a tour along unconnected line segments in a placemark folder. Additionally, Google Earth relies on the directonality of the GIS polylines (startnode, endnode) to determine where to begin and end a tour. With a route that is 7,500 there are also concerns about eye/camera placement for tours - I haven't been able to figure otu how to set this. It's all a matter of time and screwing around with the files in both ESRI ArcMap and Google Earth. There is a link below to the kmz file for the entire route.

KMZ - Full Route - 06_01_08

Full route through Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile. The roads are from the Digital Chart of the World which is adequate fo r this purpose, but somewhat out of date. I will link to a blog entry about file creation when I get a chance.
