Antarctica

(99 photos) Photos from my 10 day trip on the MS Explorer to the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands. This was the chance of a lifetime and I was not about to pass it up - I made friends, saw things I never thought I would see in my life, and set foot on the Antarctic continent. Now I just have to visit Asia, Africa, and Australasia. Four down - three to go.

Most recent photo from: 11 December 2006

Last 5 photos:

View gallery

Puerto Natales - Torres del Paine

(43 photos) My first backpacking trip in about 10 years - it was great and I cannot wait to do more. The trail was well marked - thousands of feet have trampled it and you cannot go off the path, but it was the beginning of the season (November) and I had few people, great weather, and good compaionship. There is also a great hostel in Puerto Natales - Erratic Rock where you can get all the info you need about backpacking in the park.

Most recent photo from: 26 November 2006

Last 5 photos:

View gallery

El Calafate, AR

(57 photos) Patagonia - the namesake of all of my clothes. I am finally here and on Ruta 40 the wind was as bad as they said it was. I spent 5 or 6 days in El Calafate doing a lot of activities. #1 - The Upsalla Glacier and horseback riding at Estancia Christina. #2 - The Perito Moreno Glacier - alternativo tour, #3 - Ice hiking on the Perito Moreno Glacier. Can I just say that I really like this ice hiking stuff.

Most recent photo from: 21 November 2006

Last 5 photos:

View gallery

Cueva de las Manos, AR

(19 photos) This section marks the end of my bicycle riding in South America. I rode for one last segment across the border from Chile to Argentina - a nice 20km segment of paved/not paved road. While planning to get to Cueva de las Manos I yet again ran into the wonderful Argentine helpfulness. The caves are very remote and I feel priveledged to have been able to visit them.

Most recent photo from: 16 November 2006

Last 5 photos:

View gallery

Valparaiso and Santiago

(45 photos) David's visit to Chile. We spent a few days in each city: Valpariso and Santiago and the visit culminated with a fantastic dinner at Astrid & Gaston.

Both places have their charms - Valpariso is much more laid back - sort of a Chilean San Francisco with cafes and students. Santiago is like Denver - the hustle and bustle of a big city set with a backdrop of the Andes.

Most recent photo from: 27 October 2006

Last 5 photos:

View gallery

Isla de Pasqua

(47 photos) Photos from Isla de Pasqua (Easter Island). Visiting here has always been a dream of mine and to be able to fulfill that dream....

While the "why" of the statues has been solved, the fact remains that they are still impressive to see, to touch, to watch. The islanders were the friendliest people I've run across yet and the food was incredible.

It was a privilege to be able to come to this little island in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean.

Most recent photo from: 18 October 2006

Last 5 photos:

View gallery
